The Omron HJ-203 with activity tracker is the newest pocket pedometer from Omron. What is distinct and exceptional about the HJ-203 is its activity tracker feature.

Omron Health Management Software is made for PC use only so do not expect to install in on a Mac.
I attempted to install it on my PC and was rudely surprised that it will only install if the hard drive for your Windows system is local drive C. I have my computer configured where the main hard drive is on F.
The software starts to install and then gives this message.
When you click on the change button, here is what you get.
When you click “OK”, here is the response.
I tried the software from the download. I tried the software from the CD that came with the HJ-720ITC. No success.
I sent an email to Omron support and received a nice email back that said in part:
When you receive the 1313 error message, it is because Windows is not installed on Drive C on your computer, which is an operating requirement of our software.
If Windows is not residing on Drive C on your system, you will need to speak with a representative at Microsoft for further guidance.
If Windows is residing on Drive C, please call us at the toll-free number below, for assistance over the phone. Having the system available to troubleshoot may provide us with an insight that will help us resolve this issue for you.
I fail to understand why this is a requirement of the Omron software, but since it is, I am going to have to completely reconfigure my computer if I want to use this software. My wife’s computer is also configured where drive C is not the operating system drive.
Just be aware that this is a limitation of this software, and Omron is not going to do anything about it!

I was reading the abstract for an article in the March 2009 issue of Science & Medicine in Sports & Exercise titled “Validity of the Omron HJ-112 Pedometer during Treadmill Walking” about a study of the accuracy of the HJ-112. The purpose of the study was “to examine the validity of step counts measured with the Omron HJ-112 pedometer and to assess the effect of pedometer placement.”
It concludes, “The Omron HJ-112 pedometer validly assesses steps in different BMI (body mass index – added by author) groups during constant- and variable-speed walking; other than that in the pants pocket, placement of the pedometer has little effect on validity.”
The most valuable piece of information from the study was the accuracy of the placement of the pedometer. The study found that “hip mounting produced the smallest random error (1.2%), followed by shirt pocket (1.7%), neck (2.2%), and pants pocket (5.8%).”
Lesson learned – the pants pocket is not the best place to carry a pocket pedometer. The hip still is the best place.

I purchased the three top Omron walking pedometers and Linda, my wife, and I are going to test them and develop our own results. I purchase all three from Amazon.
The Omron HJ-113 was not in the display clamshell. This may be why it is approximately four dollars cheaper than the comparable HJ-112. Packaging cost can add to the overall cost of the item.

There is a debate on the Net about the difference between the Omron HJ-112 and the HJ-113. Bottom line – there is not much difference except the Omron HJ-113 costs less than the HJ-112.

The good news is you can buy the Omron HJ-113 on Amazon for about a $20 bill (not including freight). Don’t let $20 slow down your walking exercise program. Get one now and get to walking.
